Soccer players are known for their extravagant lifestyles, fancy cars, big mansions and expensive jewelry. Unfortunately, some players end up going bankrupt despite earning millions of dollars during their careers. In this blog post, we will take a look at some soccer players who went broke.
1. Paul Merson
Paul Merson was a very talented English footballer who played for Arsenal and Aston Villa. He earned millions during his career, but unfortunately, he struggled with addiction and lost most of his money. He went through two bankruptcies and even contemplated suicide. Fortunately, he has turned his life around and is now a successful football pundit and commentator.
2. Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona is one of the greatest footballers of all time. He played for Napoli, Barcelona, Boca Juniors and the Argentina National Team. He earned millions of dollars both on and off the pitch, but despite this, he went broke. He reportedly had a gambling addiction and a lavish lifestyle, which led to his financial downfall.
3. Eric Djemba-Djemba
Eric Djemba-Djemba was a Cameroonian footballer who played for Manchester United and Aston Villa. He reportedly earned £75,000 per week during his time at Manchester United, but unfortunately, he overspent and went bankrupt. He is now playing for Swiss amateur side FC Vallorbe-Ballaigues.
4. David James
David James is a former England goalkeeper who played for Liverpool, Manchester City, and Portsmouth. He earned millions of dollars during his career, but unfortunately, he invested in a lot of failed ventures which led to his financial problems. He has since bounced back and is now a successful TV pundit and media personality.
5. Garrincha
Garrincha was one of the greatest Brazilian footballers of all time, known for his dribbling skills and ability to score. He played for Botafogo and the Brazil National Team, earning millions of dollars during his career. However, he lost most of his money due to his lavish lifestyle and problems with alcohol. He died at the age of 49, forgotten and broke.
These are just a few examples of soccer players who went broke despite earning millions of dollars during their careers. It just goes to show that no matter how much money you earn, if you do not manage it well, you could end up losing everything.
